One of the most beautiful statements in the Bible is: “God is love” (1 John 4:8). God’s love is perfect, pure, and without limits. But that doesn’t mean He loves everything. In fact, Scripture tells us there are things God hates.
What Does God Hate?
God’s hatred is not like human hatred—it’s never cruel or petty. Instead, it’s holy and righteous, coming from His perfect goodness. Because He is holy, He cannot love what is evil or corrupt.
Here are some examples from Scripture:
-
Idolatry – worshiping other gods instead of Him (Deuteronomy 12:31; 16:22; Psalm 31:6). This robs Him of the glory that belongs to Him alone.
-
Seven things in Proverbs 6:16–19 – a proud look, lying, murder, evil plotting, running to do wrong, false witnessing, and stirring up trouble among people.
-
Divorce – in cases where it violates God’s covenant design (Malachi 2:16).
God’s hatred is pure—He cannot approve of sin, rebellion, or anything unholy.
Satan Is Everything God Hates
The Bible describes Satan in many ways, and none are good:
-
The enemy (1 Peter 5:8)
-
The evil one (Matthew 6:13)
-
The father of lies and a murderer (John 8:44)
-
The accuser of believers (Revelation 12:10)
-
The tempter (1 Thessalonians 3:5)
-
Proud, wicked, violent (Isaiah 14:12–15)
-
A deceiver (John 8:44)
-
A schemer (Ephesians 6:11)
-
A thief (Luke 8:12)
Satan’s heart is permanently set against God. His fate is sealed (Revelation 20), and his destruction is certain.
But Didn’t Jesus Tell Us to Love Our Enemies?
Yes Jesus said: “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44).
But this command applies to people, not to Satan.
Why?
-
People can still repent and be saved.
-
Satan cannot repent. He has seen God, knows God, and has rejected Him forever.
Why We Cannot Love Satan
The Bible gives us no instruction to love or pray for Satan. Instead, it says:
-
His judgment is final – God has already declared there will be no forgiveness for him.
-
His heart will never change – He would reject love, just as he rejected God’s authority.
-
We are called to resist him – James 4:7 tells us to “resist the devil,” not embrace him.
The Final Word
God’s love is holy. He loves people even sinners because they can be redeemed. But Satan is beyond redemption and is the very definition of evil.
As followers of Christ, we are called to:
-
Love God with all our heart (Matthew 22:37)
-
Love people, even those who wrong us (Matthew 5:44)
-
Resist the devil and stand firm in faith (1 Peter 5:9)
Satan’s end is destruction but through Jesus, our end is eternal life.
